Περιγραφή:

Station 115 Shipdham: The Story of a USAAF Airfield is the history of a 600-acre Second World War airfield that was built on Norfolk farmland in the early 1940s. It is a mere ten minutes flying time from Norwich, between the market towns of Dereham and Watton. The airfield s origins lay as an open arable farmland; in the midst of the Second World War, the USAAF commissioned a heavy bomber base on the site, allowing them to operate from the front line of the greatest conflict the world had ever seen. USAAF aircraft flew many important missions from the site, allowing them to engage in the war over Europe in a decisive way. The days of the crewmembers were fraught with danger and stress, while they simultaneously tried to adjust to life in a foreign country. In the 1950s, after the war, the airfield reverted to farmland, but then it re-emerged as a base for an air-taxi service before transforming into the site of a crop-spraying operation for the intensive local cereal industry. In the mid-1980s Shipdham became home to a flight-training school and a light-aircraft maintenance base, before finally evolving into a general aviation airfield that provides a home for light recreational aircraft flown by keen amateur pilots in the Norfolk area. Featuring over fifty unique images, this is the story of a truly historical landmark in the Norfolk area. It is a celebration of the airfield s importance to the brave men and women who served during the Second World War, and a tribute to those who continue to preserve its memory today.
